'Ashamed, sorry' for judges' row, says Calcutta HC chief justice

Violence erupts in Imphal valley again; 2 killed, 3 hurt

Violence returned to Manipur's Imphal valley after a brief lull with unidentified gunmen shooting dead two persons and critically wounding three others in a Tuesday afternoon attack at a village in Imphal West district bordering Kangpokpi, a hill district. Jammu &Kashmir braces for rain, snow as Chillai Kalan ends

Night temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir recorded a significant rise amid cloud cover early Monday, the last day of Chillai Kalan, the annual 40-day period of harshest winter. All places in J&K recorded minimum temperatures above freezing point, said a Met department official. The only exception was Gulmarg in south Kashmir, which recorded a low of -3.2°C and received 10cm snowfall in the past 24 hours till 8.30pm Sunday.

BJP asks Odisha CM to act on his commitment to make Padampur a district

BJP leader Pradip Purohit on Saturday submitted a memorandum to Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik through Suresh Mahapatra, chief advisor to chief minister’s office (CMO), asking the chief minister to act on his "commitment" to convert Padampur sub-division into a district. Purohit said the CM had also made commitments to provide input subsidies to farmers and opening of 60 closed schools in Padampur. "But these assurances remained in pen and paper only. I came to the state secretariat with the memorandum to remind the CM of his previous commitments," he added.

Lashkar terrorist who targeted Pandits & migrants killed in Shopian

A Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist, Bilal Ahmed Bhat, involved in a series of killings of soldiers, migrant workers, and Pandits, was gunned down in an encounter in Kashmir's Shopian district. Bhat fired on the police, army, and CRPF personnel during a cordon-and-search operation. His body was seized along with a large cache that included an AK rifle and magazines. Bhat, a resident of Shopian, unleashed a spate of attacks last year, targeting various people. He lured local youths to take up terrorism and even killed a fellow terrorist.

Tribal rights activists condemn large scale tree-felling in Hasdeo after “fake gram sabha”

Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan highlights the destruction caused by large-scale tree-cutting in Hasdeo Aranya forests for coal mining, leading to the repression of tribal activists and communities. Fake gram sabhas are being organized for coal blocks allocated to corporate houses. The destruction of Hasdeo forests is driven by corporate profit, not coal demand. Adivasi communities across the country suffer the greatest cost of development schemes while being excluded from progress. The brutal treatment of adivasis protesting deforestation and the criminalization of their protests is a consequence of the pursuit of a 'development' agenda.
