President's call on mercy pleas final, no appeal, proposes BNSS Bill

In what will do away with judicial review of decisions taken by the President on mercy petitions of death row convicts, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill (BNSS) 2023 seeks to bar appeals against any order made by the President in exercise of the power to grant pardon or commute a death sentence under Article 72 of the Constitution. Further, the courts cannot go into the grounds of the President’s decision.

Isro releases much-awaited pictures of Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram

The photos, taken by the rover Pragyan at 7.35am Wednesday, show the ramp that allowed the rover to roll out, aside from two payloads descending on to the lunar surface for in-situ experiments. The two payloads seen descending from Vikram are Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA) and Chandra’s Surface Thermo Physical Experiment (ChaSTE). These navigation cameras on Pragyan, the ones that guide the rover, were developed in a quiet lab called LEOS in Bengaluru.

With soccer betting app, Chinese dupes 1,200 of Rs 1,400cr in 9 days

A Chinese national has been identified as the mastermind of a football betting app that scammed 1,200 people in northern Gujarat, India, out of INR1,400 crore ($188m) in just nine days. Woo Uyanbe, who remains at large, is believed to have run the racket in partnership with collaborators in Patan and Banaskantha. The app, called Dani Data, promised large returns and solicited bets on football games, collecting around INR200 crore a day.

Bailey bridge near LAC collapses after heavy rain

A bailey bridge located over Chorgad river at Nelong valley region of Gangotri national park (GNP) in Uttarkashi district has collapsed after its embankment got washed away due to the recent heavy rainfall. Negating arguments asserting the autonomy and unresolved status of Jammu and Kashmir, the SC on Thursday said no vestige of sovereignty rested with J&K and its integration with India is absolute after the October 1947 signing of Instrument of Accession by the Maharaja of Kashmir. Another Manipur woman reports gang rape on May 3

A 37-year-old mother holding her two minor sons and fleeing a mob that had burned down their house in Manipur on May 3 was waylaid by a group of men, pinned down and allegedly gang-raped, she said in a Zero FIR registered on August 9, over three months after the crime.
