Asaram, 82, gets life in jail on former devotee’s plaint of rape, sodomy

A sessions court in Gandhinagar on Tuesday sentenced Asumal Harpalani alias Asaram to life imprisonment after holding him guilty of rape and sodomy, one decade after a former devotee made the complaint against him. According to one of the lawyers present, the 82-year-old convict lamented: ‘Aur bhi saza karva dete!’ (you could inflict even more punishment) on hearing the sentence.

Collegium gives 2 more names for Supreme Court, says priority for pending list

The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud recommended the Centre to elevate Chief Justice of Allahabad HC Justice Rajesh Bindal and Chief Justice of Gujarat HC Justice Aravind Kumar to the apex court and told the government that five names which were earlier recommended and pending it's approval shall have precedence over these two names and they be notified first.

In the build up to next year’s Lok Sabha election, the government has asked ministers and departments to send out messages and details of government initiatives focused on different targeted segments, with a clear distinction made for age groups. They have been urged to be active on different social media platforms, instead of limiting their feeds to Twitter, and depend only on press releases.

Supreme Court to hear plea on BBC documentary on PM Modi; waste of court’s time, says Rijiju

The SC on Monday agreed to hear a plea challenging the government’s decision to block the BBC documentary on 2002 Gujarat riots, leading law minister Kiren Rijiju to target petitioners for “wasting the precious time of SC”. The joint petition alleging that criticism of the government or its policies does not tantamount to violating sovereignty and integrity of the country and blocking critical views is unconstitutional. The court posted hearing on February 6.

Growth indicator: Night lights up 43% in 10 yrs; 400% in some states

Decadal Change of Night Time Light over India from Space (2012-2021), released by Isro’s National Remote Sensing Centre — shows that overall at the national level, normalised NTL radiance increased by 43% in 2021 compared to 2012. Significant increase was observed in Bihar (474%), Manipur (441%), Ladakh (280%) and Kerala (119%), while good increase was observed in Arunachal Pradesh (66%), MP (66%), UP (61%) and Gujarat (58%).

Centre set to integrate forensic probe with justice system: Shah

Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the Centre will integrate forensic science-based investigation with the justice system to increase the conviction rate which is around 50% currently. Shah said the conviction rate in Canada is 62%, Israel 93%, UK 80% and the US 90%. He was in Dharwad on Saturday to lay the foundation stone for the ninth off-campus facility of the National Forensic Sciences University.

India begins work on 135km Ladakh road to link key locations

India has started building a strategic road along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh that will, in the most part, trace the Indus and mirror a blacktop surface link on the Chinese side. India modernising nuke arsenal with eye on China, says American report

India continues to modernise its nuclear arsenal and operationalise its nascent triad, and the country's nuke strategy, traditionally focused on Pakistan, now appears to place increased emphasis on China, says a 2022 report of the Federation of American Scientists. At least four new weapon systems are under development to complement or replace the country's existing nuclear-capable aircraft, land-based delivery systems and submarine launched missiles, it said.

India has invited all member-states, including Pakistan, for the SCO foreign ministers' meeting which it will host in Goa on May 4-5 this year. Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov are likely to participate in the meet. 2 2 accused of killing 1  7 in post-Godhra riot acquitted
