Social media accounts can’t be arbitrarily suspended: Govt

The Centre on Wednesday told the Delhi high court that a citizen’s fundamental rights must be respected. In an affidavit filed on a plea by Twitter users Megh Bulletin and Wokeflix challenging the suspension of accounts by the platform, the government said a person’s liberty and freedom of expression cannot be “waylaid or jettisoned in the slipstream of social and technological advancement”, adding that suspension of accounts must be the last resort.

Assam CM Sarma blames Cong for Assam-Meghalaya conflict over border

Home minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday the Assam-Meghalaya accord has ended the dispute in about 70% of the inter-state border areas and differences in the remaining six places will be resolved soon. “Today is a historic day for the conflict-less northeast India. Since 2014, PM Modi has wanted peace, development, prosperity and cultural protection and several initiatives have been taken in this regard,” he said.

Remarking that courts should take a liberal view in awarding compensation to victims who are left 100% disabled and also suffer mental disabilities after road accidents, the Supreme Court on Tuesday extended its helping hand to one such child and awarded Rs 50 lakh compensation with 7.5% interest per annum. The total amount could come to about Rs 1 crore as the accident took place in 12 years ago.

Arms export tops Rs 11.6k crore, up from Rs 1.9k crore in 2014-15: Govt

The value of arms exports by India has grown approximately by six times since 2014, with the ongoing financial year registering Rs 11,607 crore till now, the defence ministry said on Friday. From Rs 1,941 crore in the 2014-2015 fiscal, the value of defence exports has risen to Rs 11,607 crore in 2021-2022 till March 21, junior defence minister Ajay Bhatt said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

8 burnt to death after murder of TMC neta

Eight Bengal villagers, most of them possibly women and children, burned to death in a blaze that engulfed a row of houses at Bogtui village in Rampurhat within an hour of a TMC deputy panchayat head’s murder on Monday, putting the state back on a familiar trail of allegations about political violence and reprisal. The victims couldn’t be immediately identified as bodies were charred beyond recognition, officials said.

Novavax says its Covid vaccine gets India authorisation for adolescents

Novavax Inc on Tuesday said that the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has granted emergency use authorisation for its Covid-19 vaccine for adolescents aged 12 to 17 in the country. The authorization is a global first for the age group for the vaccine, which is manufactured and marketed in India by the Serum Institute of India under the brand name Covovax. Novavax last month said its vaccine was 80% effective against Covid-19 in a late-stage trial testing the shot in 2,247 childern.
